Vitour P1 vs Yokohama A052 Tire Test #2 Autocross on Asphalt #2

Vitour P1 vs Yokohama A052 Tire Test #2 Autocross on Asphalt #2

Conclusions:
The ultimate fast lap times are too close to call between the A052 and Vitour P1 in the same size
The P1 works surprisingly well in 48F temps even on the first run
The first run time between the A052 and P1 was too close to call (this was a surprise to me, I expected the A052 to have an advantage at 48F and it did not)
The P1 kept their pace for every run and did not have any fall off.
A052 wear substantially more than the P1
The 345/25/19 P1 on a 19x11 wheel is faster/has more grip than a 315/30/18 on a 18x12 wheel.
We were able to reproduce wear that looked like a early precursor along the lines of what is shown in the GRM test. But vastly less severe. It only showed itself by what I would describe as overdriving / excessive sliding, when the tires are cold / first run. This happened on the 345/19 on the first run or two when cold. Mostly after Mike's first on the 345s where I thought he was "overdriving" before I inspected the tires. On subsequent runs when the tires were at normal temperature this sort of wear stopped/mostly disappeared. I also think it could have something to do with the surface. Or could be off.

The course was tight and technical, what many would refer to as "a Miata course".
2023 Corvette Stingray, stock
48-51F, Clear skys. Asphalt, OK condition, not great. Bumpy
2 drivers Dallas Reed / Mike Young, test n tune style event, not much break between runs.
Same tires that were new at the beginning of the Road America event my previous tests were based around, with addition of 345/19 P1 rears for a test segment

Runs:
Listed in order as the day goes, conditions improved a bit as the day went on.
I will list runs that have cones as dirty. We could throw them out but including them gets a better perspective IMO.
We started the day on A052. The weather and surface were cold.
The thought was to do 3 runs or until we did a run we felt was hard to beat then switch drivers or tires.
We would start on the A052 to learn the course, plus figured it was coldest at the beginning of the day and assumed the A052 would be the better choice given how cold it was.

We decided that in this condition a A052 was good for somewhere between a 39.9 and a 39.548 and switched to the exact same size P1.

40.395 We were stunned on this run by the time. We expected the P1 would not be so good on the first run, but obviously it was right there with the A052. It came in within the first 1/4 of the course or so.

We concluded the A052 and P1 offered very similar times. The P1 were also good on the first run, and wasn't any more a throwaway than it was on the A052.
P1 pinched rear 345 early afternoon
We swapped the 315/18 rear for new/unused 345/25/19 on 19x11. Mike did some burnout action to scrub the tires a bit before run 1.

40.30 Mike thought the rear was a bit excessively loose. I expect it was still not quite scrubbed. I told him he was overdriving, I was riding with him for these two runs. We observed some interesting wear that reminded me of the wear noted in the GRM test, not to that extreme but in the same vein.

A052 afternoon
Lets try the A052 again, keep in mind the surface has warmed a good bit in the afternoon sun since this morning and over the day, some improvement is likely due to this plus just better understanding of how to attack the course

I mounted up the 295/315 P1 to give that another shot as I fully expected I could match the 38.7 time with the improved conditions and better familiarity with the course, however the event was ended, with another worker shift obligation needed to do more runs and I did not have enough time to do a work shift and do more runs due to other obligations that day.
Either way a productive test day for sure!

Results had us 3rd/4th PAX for the day. #1 spot was held by a STX FRS on the 245/17 P1, the same one I co-drove and did a write up on in this group a few weeks ago. GS Civic on I believe RE71RS taking the #2 spot. This event did not have too many of the usual fast guys as it was not a competition event.
