Big News for the P1 in CAM/XS

Advocating for the inclusion of the Vitour Tempesta P1 tire in CAM/XS has been a personal mission of mine for some time. This journey began as early as the spring VIR TTNT event, where I had a productive conversation with JG about finding a path forward.

While this Fastrack decision feels like a win, it’s worth noting that it essentially restores the eligibility we had in 2023. Back then, the P1 was already allowed in the XS category for national Solo. I saw great success that year, running the P1 at events like the CAM Challenge, Peru Tour, and Nationals in Lincoln. Eric Anderson’s XB-winning car at Nationals even sported 285/15 P1s.

In 2023, the P1 was a niche tire, known mostly for its groundbreaking 285/30/15 size. But a mix of drama—stemming from AVT, the GRM article, and loopholes in the TT rulebook—led to the P1’s exclusion from any 200TW national class for 2024. This decision effectively sidelined the tire from national-level competition.

Keeping the Momentum in 2024

Despite the national setback, the Vitour P1 gained incredible traction in regional and local events. I personally ran the tire at the Peru Tour on an E-Ray in SSP and competed in numerous SCCA National TT events in the Unlimited class.

Across regional competitions, including IndySCCA’s Solo and TT series, Gridlife, and local events, the P1 became a standout performer. The CAM/XS Solo community in particular embraced the tire for its unique size offerings tailored to cars like the C8 Z06.

At Lincoln, for example, Brian Peters had to use a suboptimal mixed setup of A052s on the front and CRS tires on the rear—a combination I can confirm doesn’t perform as well as a full P1 setup. The P1 proved to be the only competitive 200TW tire for certain vehicles in these categories.

The CRS Shortage and Market Impact

The CRS tire shortage has also shaped the landscape. Repeated U.S. Customs issues have restricted CRS shipments, leaving only a few samples available, often for testing by individuals like Andy Hollis and Michael Young.

While this situation temporarily benefits the P1, I believe a healthy racing community thrives on more choices—not fewer.

CAM/XS Approval and What It Means

Here’s the key update from December 2024 Fastrack:

CAM/XS Category – ITEM 26: #36833 Allow Vitour P1

“Per the SEB, change Appendix B under Classic American Muscle / Xtreme Street Category as follows:
... Only tires which meet SCCA Solo Street Category eligibility rules, or appear on the following list, are permitted:
• Vitour Tempesta P1, P1+”

This approval represents a step forward for the P1. CAM/XS, as a non-championship class, offers more flexibility in rules, and it’s clear the SEB and SAC recognize the tire’s growing reputation.

Looking Ahead

My own letter (#36648) proposing P1 eligibility in the Street category is still under review. There’s a potential path forward, but it requires collaboration from multiple parties.

I’ll continue pushing for progress and sharing updates on both Solo and beyond. Vitour remains committed to working with racers, organizers, and partners to advance motorsports for everyone.

Thank you for your support, and here’s to a bright future for the Vitour Tempesta P1! Stay tuned for more updates.
