David Cahoon recently put the Vitour Tempesta P1 through its paces on both autocross and track—and walked away impressed. With back-to-back events in his 2018 Camaro SS 1LE, he got a full feel for what the P1s can do when pushed at the limit.
Autocross First Impressions
At a local BMW Club autocross with around 30 competitors, David came out fast—grabbing fastest time of the day and finishing second overall. He was running a 345 square setup on 18x12 wheels, paired with MCS RR2 suspension. The day started cool, and with only 60 street miles on the tires, the P1s took time to come in. But by the second afternoon run, they were hooked up. The third afternoon run earned him FTD.
One of the biggest surprises? How well the P1s handled aggressive driving. David noted they tolerate large slip angles without giving up grip—making them forgiving at the limit and great for drivers who like to push.
Strong Braking and Track Confidence
David brought the car to a PCA track day the very next day and ran in the intermediate group with an instructor. Even among a field of Porsche GT4s and GT3s, the Camaro stood out. The P1s delivered huge braking grip—strong enough that he never even triggered ABS, despite running Ferodo DS3.12 pads that typically hit the limit on other tires. He gained ground on more track-prepped cars in the brake zones, and cornering grip was a noticeable jump from the OE Goodyear SC3s.
He clocked faster average G-forces, saw consistent performance in a 20+ minute session, and didn’t experience overheating—even in low 70s ambient temps. For casual HPDE use, the P1s offered more grip than expected, and matched or exceeded the feel of popular R-comp tires.
Everyday Versatility with Serious Speed
On the way to and from events, David also noted daily drivability benefits. Even when caught in rain on the highway, the P1s handled predictably and confidently. While grip improves as they heat up, he sees them as a perfect hot-weather or co-driver autocross tire—and a real performer on track days.
Final Thoughts
David summed it up clearly—while the P1s might not be the go-to for every type of autocross event or every weather condition, they’re proving to be a top-tier option where heat, grip, and repeatability matter. And on track? He thinks they’re in the same conversation as GY SC3Rs or Cup 2 Rs.
We’ll let his results speak for themselves. The Vitour Tempesta P1 continues to impress drivers across disciplines—and it’s clear these tires are built to take whatever you throw at them.
